Strait of Hormuz Crisis: Iran Lays Mines, Oil Shipping Halts, and Global Energy Prices Surge

Iran's mining of the Strait of Hormuz — which carries roughly one-fifth of global crude oil — has triggered a global energy emergency of unprecedented proportions. Traffic through the Strait dropped by 97% since February 28, effectively shutting down one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints.

Multiple major shipping companies, including Maersk, MSC, and CMA CGM, have suspended passage through the waterway indefinitely. Insurance premiums for vessels transiting the region have skyrocketed, with Lloyd's of London reporting a tenfold increase in war-risk premiums.

Global crude oil prices surged over 10%, with Brent crude hitting multi-year highs. European natural gas prices jumped sharply as LNG shipments from Qatar — which also transit the strait — were disrupted. Energy analysts warn that prolonged disruption could push oil prices above $120 per barrel.

Iran sent 11.7 million barrels of crude oil to China before the blockade took effect, suggesting advance planning of the mining operation. China has called for restraint from all parties while quietly increasing its strategic petroleum reserves.

Iran has threatened to maintain the blockade until US strikes cease, creating a dangerous standoff. The US Navy destroyed 16 Iranian minelayers in response, but naval experts warn that clearing the mines already laid could take weeks or months, even after hostilities end.

The economic fallout extends far beyond oil markets. Shipping costs for goods transiting from Asia to Europe have doubled, and several countries in South Asia and East Africa that depend on Gulf oil imports are facing acute fuel shortages. The International Energy Agency has called an emergency meeting to discuss coordinated strategic petroleum reserve releases.
