Israel-Lebanon Conflict Escalates: Ground Invasion Looms as Hezbollah Formally Joins the War

Israel has intensified its aerial operations against Lebanon and is actively preparing for a ground invasion south of the Litani River, according to Israeli military officials. The operation represents the most significant Israeli military action in Lebanon since the 2006 war and comes amid the broader regional conflagration triggered by the Iran conflict.

Hezbollah formally declared its entry into the broader regional war on Iran's side, launching increased missile barrages at Israeli territories including Tel Aviv. The group's leader stated that Hezbollah would "fight on all fronts" until the US-Israeli strikes on Iran cease, marking a significant escalation from the group's previous posture of limited border skirmishes.

Lebanon's president called for direct negotiations with Israel to establish permanent border security arrangements, in what analysts see as an attempt to separate Lebanon's fate from the broader Iran conflict. However, Hezbollah's political wing has rejected any negotiations while the Iran campaign continues.

Thousands have fled Beirut due to Israeli strikes targeting Hezbollah command centers and weapons depots in the southern suburbs. Warnings have been issued for cities including Tyre and Sidon, where Israeli forces have dropped leaflets urging civilians to evacuate ahead of potential ground operations.

Hezbollah is reportedly reverting to guerrilla warfare tactics in anticipation of a full-scale invasion, embedding fighters in civilian areas and preparing extensive tunnel networks and fortified positions south of the Litani River. Military analysts warn that a ground campaign could result in significant casualties on both sides.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has reported multiple incidents of fire near its positions and has called on all parties to respect the safety of peacekeeping personnel. Several countries contributing troops to UNIFIL are considering withdrawing their contingents if the situation deteriorates further.
