Gaza Humanitarian Crisis Deepens: Border Closures, Food Shortages, and a Stalled Peace Plan
The Gaza conflict has entered a new phase of humanitarian emergency, compounded by the regional Iran war that has diverted international attention and resources. Israeli authorities closed border crossings on February 28, halting humanitarian access, medical evacuations, and commercial supplies into the besieged territory.
Only approximately 200 aid trucks enter daily versus the 600 needed to meet the population's basic needs, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The shortfall has created acute shortages of food, medicine, and clean water across all areas of the Gaza Strip.
Food prices have soared and essential staples have vanished from shelves. The World Food Programme reports that a bag of flour that cost $5 before the border closures now sells for over $40 on the black market. Malnutrition rates among children under five have reached emergency thresholds in northern Gaza.
Between February 26 and March 5, 18 Palestinians were killed and 41 injured in ongoing military operations, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Hospitals continue to operate at severely reduced capacity, with many lacking basic surgical supplies and medications.
Trump's Gaza peace plan — endorsed by the UN Security Council in a rare show of unanimity — is now on hold as the administration focuses on the Iran campaign. The plan calls for a ceasefire, hostage exchanges, demilitarization of militant groups, and a pathway to Palestinian statehood.
Humanitarian organizations have warned that the combination of border closures, ongoing military operations, and the diversion of international attention to the Iran conflict has created conditions for a catastrophic famine. The International Committee of the Red Cross has called for immediate and unimpeded humanitarian access.
